Do What I Say, Not What I Do

Here’s how I screwed this up. Instead of following my own advice (i.e. using the steps and tools I wrote about in my book YOU TO THE 10th POWER), I fell back into an old habit of doing what I thought other people wanted me to do.

In my quest for success, I pushed when I needed to Back Off. I panicked instead of Breathing. I blindly followed other people’s thought processes and experiences instead of exercising my own Conscious Thought, and I did what other people suggested I do instead of taking my own Conscious Action.

And I broke down.

The amount of gratitude I have for all the healing work I’ve done is immeasurable.  In the past, this … Read the rest

Empowered Depression

Did you know that you can be depressed and empowered at the same time? I wouldn’t have believed it either if it weren’t the exact space I’m in right now.

As someone who has spent the majority of his life in a clinical depression, I have known the landscape intimately. Because of the deep healing work I’ve done over the past several years, in additional to following my own advice in using the tools I put in my book YOU TO THE 10th POWER, I haven’t been in a deep depression for about 7 years.

I thought that would change today. The last couple of days have been emotionally taxing for me. I’ve been on a roller-coaster ride of emotional … Read the rest

To the 99%

I love the Occupy Movement. It’s reminiscent of the greatest peaceful revolutionary movements of the Earth’s history. These movements created global change in the way Occupy is doing, and I have great love and respect for it.

I agree that greed is behind most of the greatest offenses against every living being on the planet.

I also agree – hold on to your hat – with the Republican viewpoint that people should stop looking for handouts. (Including big business bailouts, thankyouverymuch.)

Here’s the problem… in the Divided States of America we were sold on this thing called the “American Dream”. Get a job, be loyal for 20 or 30 years and retire with a pension that will keep you financially … Read the rest

Ineffective Tawking

In moments of judgmental weakness I call it “lazy talk”.  Sound-bites, acronyms, buzzwords, slogans, snippets.  We use these tools to support our ADD mindset and I’m assuming you know what I mean.

Our brains process crap-loads of information in fractions of seconds and this process includes denotation, connotation, and annotation.  That’s a lot of tations…

What I’m saying is that for every word, phrase, sentence and paragraph that we read, speak and think, we go through a complicated yet almost instantaneous process to understand it.  Words are merely symbols… shortcuts that convey a thought or idea.  But each word is open to subjective interpretation regardless of the dictionary definition (which can differ from one dictionary to the next).

The One in the Mirror (A 9/11 Tribute)

I’m very torn. As we approach the 10th anniversary of the most notable terrorist attacks on American soil in history, there is much talk of patriotism, unity, and community. The problem for me is that as a person who truly believes that all people are created equal and that we are all brethren, I cannot understand how anyone can tout patriotism in the same breath as unity and community.

Dictionary.com defines patriotism as “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national loyalty.”  While the definition does not include the words “above all others”, that is, in fact, the emotional meaning of the word.  When you claim to be a patriot, you are telling the world that your devotion is … Read the rest

Goodnight, Irene

Last night Hurricane Irene traveled up the east coast and directly through the middle of New Jersey where I live. I followed the progress all night on the news and on Facebook and found the varying perceptions to be an amazing example of how incredibly different each one is. For each person offering thanks that it wasn’t as bad as expected, another was complaining that it was just an example of the government and news agencies trying to create a state of panic for profit.

I also found it interesting how much the complaining pissed me off. As of the time I’m writing this, there are a reported 14 dead attributed to the storm. I don’t think those people and … Read the rest
